Preakness Academy is as an alternative middle school for grades 5-8 general and special education (not including BD) students. The school is able to enroll up to 40 pupils.
Potential students are those who may benefit from:
- A specialized learning environment with a personalized touch.
- Individual and group sessions with a counselor and/or behaviorist.
- A more structured and meaningful learning environment for long-term suspensions and home instruction.
Program Features
- Focus on grit and resiliency. The work of Carol Dweck and Angela Duckworth will be at the center of the program.
- Small class sizes (5-10 students).
- Core instruction from content-certified teachers in math, language arts, social studies, and science.
- Part-time guidance counselor and behaviorist.
- Part-time guidance counselor and behaviorist.
- Common planning/PLC time built in for teachers to explore student data and plan inter-disciplinary lessons.
- Group and individualized remediation sessions.
- Time daily to celebrate/meet as a community and participate in the school's philosophy of instilling grit and resiliency.
