Skylands School for the Exceptional

  • Skylands School is a full day program dedicated to providing the finest possible educational experience for children identified as Multiple Disabled and/or Medically Fragile. The mission of our school is to maximize each student’s education by providing a highly structured, individualized, and caring learning environment. A transdisciplinary team approach is utilized whereby all team members – Special Education Teacher, Speech & Language Specialist, Occupational and Physical Therapist, Registered Nurse, Behavior Analyst, and Teacher Assistants – work together towards the development and implementation of curriculum to meet the unique needs of each student.

    • Nurturing and supportive atmosphere
    • One-to-one and small group instruction based upon individual student needs
    • Small class size (no more than 8 students)
    • Registered nurse on site at all times
    • A curriculum which follows the requirements outlined in the Core Curriculum Standards (CCCS) for the State of New Jersey
    • A curriculum that provides for the development of:
      • Communication skills through the use of a Total Communication Approach including, but not limited to, basic sign language, The Picture Exchange System (PECS), and Augmentative/Alternative Communication
      • Cognitive skills
      • Fine and gross motor skills
      • Self-help skills
      • Social skills
      • Daily living skills
      • Assistive Technology
    • Extensive sensory integration training in a multi-sensory environment
    • Transdisciplinary support services included in tuition for Speech & Language therapy, Occupational therapy, and Physical therapy and Behavioral Consultation
    • Daily communication and involvement with the home
    • Positive personal relationship between staff, students, and their families
    • Mobility Opportunities Via Education (M.O.V.E.)
    • Flexible enrollment to accommodate students attending part-time or students transitioning back into their home district
    • Availability of Extended School Year (4-hour school day)
      • Extensive sensory integration training in a multi-sensory environment
      • Transdisciplinary support services included in tuition for Speech & Language therapy,
      • Occupational therapy, and Physical therapy and Behavioral Consultation
      • Daily communication and involvement with the home
      • Positive personal relationship between staff, students, and their families
      • Mobility Opportunities Via Education (M.O.V.E.)
      • Flexible enrollment to accommodate students attending part-time or students transitioning back into their home district

    This is the opportunity for a Multiply Disabled and/or Medically Fragile student to be placed in a full day school program that individualizes to meet each student’s special needs throughout the school day.
